Michael McMahon ’77

Michael was initiated into Sigma Phi Epsilon in Fall 1973 and graduated from the University of Arizona with a BS in Business Administration:Finance in 1977.

As an undergraduate, he served the chapter as President in 1976 and it’s Comptroller in 1975.  As an alumnus, he has worked with the investment committee of the Alumni Board over the last few years investing proceeds of the sale of 1420 N. Vine.

Michael has enjoyed a long career trading and underwriting Municipal bonds.   He is currently a Municipal Bond Trader/Underwriter and Principal for Cronin & Company, Inc. in Minneapolis, MN.  He began his career in Municipal Bond Trading with the Arizona Bank in Phoenix in 1978.   In 1987 he joined Dean Witter and Co in Seattle Wa where he was Vice President/Trader Municipal Bond Trading until 1989.   He then joined Dain Bosworth  in Seattle and they relocated him to Minneapolis, MN in 1990 where he served as First VP – Institutional Municipal Trading  until 1993. He then joined Piper Jaffray and Company where he was  Director and Manager, Municipal Bond Trading and Underwriting until 2001. In 2002 he joined Legg Mason & Co where he was Managing Director and Manager, Municipal Bond Trading and Underwriting until 2005 when Legg Mason Capital Markets Division was acquired by Stifel Nicolaus & Co.  At Stifel Nicolaus he was Managing Director, Municipal Bond Trading & Underwriting  until March 2009 when he joined Cronin and Company.

Brother McMahon received Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 1984 for his work in the finance industry. He also served on the University of Arizona Phoenix Alumni Board from 1983 to 1985 and served as its  President in 1985. In 1985, he won the University of Arizona Alumni Association A.L. Slonaker Service Award. He served on the Board of Directors of the Orono Youth Hockey Association (MN) from 2001 through 2004 and served as it’s President in 2003.

He is married to Michele and they have two daughters, one son and four grandchildren.

Michael says, “During my four years with Sig Ep in Tucson I developed lasting friendships that seem to transcend the years. My brothers from Arizona Beta are certainly my oldest and dearest friends. The memories of my years in Tucson may be a bit faded but it only takes a few minutes back with these guys to bring back the laughs and smiles they we all enjoyed way back then… And there certainly are some memories that will never fade.”
