Jay K. Harness MD ’65

Brother Jay Harness, MD credits Arizona Beta of Sigma Phi Epsilon as laying the foundation for his personal and professional life. As an undergraduate Harness served the chapter as Vice President (1962-1963) and President (1963-1964)  as well as serving as IFC President  (1964-1965) all while pursuing a degree in Zoology.

After earning said degree in ’65, Jay attended Med School at the University of Michigan, earning his MD in 1968.

Doctor Harness has had a successful career in the medical field, both as a physician and educator. Past positions include Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan; Associate Professor of Surgery at Tufts University; Professor of Surgery at the University of California, Davis; Clinical Professor of Surgery at both the University of California, San Francisco and the University of California, Irvine.  He is currently running a private practice as a breast surgeon.

He has served as Chairman, AMA Intern & Resident Section, been awarded the Medal of the Danish Surgical Society, the Orange County Physician of Excellence Award and is recognized in Super Doctors (Southern California) and Best Doctors In America.

Jay has served as President for the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and Breast Surgery International.

As a Sig Ep alumnus he has been awarded the Sigma Phi Epsilon Citation Award.

He has three children: Kelly Harness, 44, Dedorah Harness Seelinger, 41, and Steve Harness, 35.
